PERIKITUS ON CLUB FONOGRAMA!

CHECK OUT THE LINK: http://www.clubfonograma.com/2010/01/featured-pernett-perikitus.html

Sometimes I write good things on Twitter; recently I described Pernett’s “Perikitus!” as a track as waterly delicious as Animal Collective’s “My Girls.” And that could be read as a stretch from my part, because one song is about birds and the other about capturing our current state of individualism, see they’re not too far away from each other, and yes they run through the same vein music-wise. Pernett sings about Colombia in the most colorful and embryonic ways. If your ears need some refreshment, Pernett’s latest El Mago is for you. But we’ll get to the whole album soon; in the meantime let’s get to one of my favorite songs of the moment, and one of the very best from our Fonogramaticos Vol..6 compilation.
“Perikitus!” is a fascinating poetic piece about birds, wings and colors. “Vuelan periquitos sobre Barranquilla, cometas de colores que el cielo estampillan, flores del viento que cantan felices…” That phrase alone should be enough to stimulate the senses, if not, force your way into it, at this point what’s important is to get you floating one way or another. It’s the sound fluttering its surrounding space, a kind of self-aware beauty that celebrates its own march; notice the fireworks between the song’s layers, notice its whimsicality! This is flat-out gorgeous. I found this video over at YouTube, which Pernett uses as visual background for his live shows, very fitting.

MORE ON PERNETT!

Pernett has just released ‘El Mago’, an album produced in Cali, where he actually resides. His progressive folklore is fully charged in this album that also includes important collaborations with top local talent, and is a union of Colombia's Caribbean and Pacific coasts' rhythms. The result is a more universal sound.

Pernett is currently at a new level in his music and this is evident in 'El Mago'. For the first time we get to see what a talented artist he truly is. Apart from composing, producing, mixing and singing , he also recorded the traditional instruments such as percussions, maracas, gaita an guache. All of this without leaving behind his twisted electronic beats, full of synthesizers and special effects.

Since early childhood he was captivated by music, and curiosity made him his own teacher. At age 9 he was making music with a tape recorder, a guitar and a Casiotonebank CTK 120. This musical experiences shaped Pernett’s own rhythms and styles: folklore produced with electronic instruments. This innovative and creative force has become him one of the most important artists of Colombian folklore.

His passion for percussion, learned from the maestro Itsvan Shango Dely and his sons Shangó and David, and his singular attraction to the Carnival of Barranquilla’s music, inherited from his father and his family, who for years have been the presidents of a major dance group folk of this city, nourished him with a unique sound.

Afterwards Pernett goes to Bogota, there he studied music composition at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and, with another caribians, begin to interpret Caribbean folklore at corners and parks in Bogota. In 2002, while working on his first album he meets English producer Richard Blair, and is invited to make part of Sidestepper, Colombia’s most international world music group. Pernett has widely toured with Sidestepper in USA,Mexico, Canada and Europe.

In 2004, Pernett released his first album, an EP called “Musica Pa'Pick Up”, an album of five songs. The first success of this album is called 'Huele a Mariacachafa' and the best known song of this work is 'Caribbean Raver'.

Then in 2006, after an extensive european tour promoting his first EP, he released his second EP “Cumbia Galactica”.

In 2008 he released his first full album “Arbol”, a ground breaking album with collaborations from Visitante Calle 13, son Palenque, Sergio Arias from Malalma y Tostao from Chocquibtown.

With 'El Mago' Pernett has been established as the vanguard force of Colombian music, breaking barriers and experimenting with new elements!

PERNETT : recent press

“Pernett is one of the referents in modern Colombian music. This pioneer of the flourishing alternative movement in his country brings us ‘El Mago’, an album that shows a folkloric sensibility touched up with electronic rythms.”

'MUSICA COLOMBIANA DE AVANZADA' SBS Radio Online. Australia. Enero 2010

“Pernett adds electronic beats to the music of both Colombian coasts and the result is the excellent album ‘El Mago’. However, ‘El Mago’ is a folkloric piece of work, where musicians from the Caribbean and the Pacific join to create contemporary Colombian sounds.”

‘EL NUEVO FOLCLOR ELECTRÓNICO DE PERNETT’ Radio Gladys Palmera. España. Nov. 2009

“Pernett returns with his hands full of tricks and a selection of songs that can be described as his best work so far. A real artist that follows his instincts and his roots, taking them to the next level and presenting them to the world in an album called ‘El Mago’. This CD will travel in time transforming Pernett into a pioneer and fearless Latin American producer.”
‘CD REVIEW’, La Fabrika. USA Nov. 2009

“Magician of the galactic cumbia. Pernett is a synonym for party, folklore, cumbia, tambó, gaita, maracas, guache and tradition. In an apparently contradictory manner, he is also a synonym for an advanced vanguard of experimental fusion. Pioneer in the electro cumbé movement, this native to Barranquilla has been traveling around the country for years with his massive afro, and his revolutionary and innovative ideas. “

‘PERNETT, LA NUEVA RAZA DEL FOCLOR COSMICO' El Heraldo. Dic. 2009

“The Magician of the cumbia is Barranquilla's Humberto Pernett, another of the musicians of The New Cumbia Colombiana who boldly is renewing the sounds of Mother Cumbia
